Turn the handle, and the planets move.
This is an orrery — a mechanical model of the solar system — built from bricks. A gear train under the deck drives planets mounted on rods at different orbital radii, so cranking the handle sets the whole system turning at once. It is the oldest and best way of showing a child why a year is a year.
Gears you can see working
The drive train is left exposed on the upper deck rather than hidden inside a housing. Watching a small gear turn a large one slowly is the entire principle of mechanical advantage, delivered without a word of explanation, and it is the reason this holds attention longer than a static model.
The planets, in order and to scale of a sort
Each planet sits on its own arm at its own distance, with Saturn ringed and the inner planets clustered tight against the sun. Orbital order and relative spacing are what children actually take away — and they are far easier to remember once you have turned them by hand.
A tiered base that does the engineering
The two-level circular base houses the mechanism below and carries the orbital arms above, which is what keeps a model this top-heavy stable. It is also where most of the interesting building happens.
Built to be displayed, not boxed
Finished, it is a desk object — the kind that gets picked up and cranked by every visitor who walks past it. Which is rather the point of owning one."
