Girls Jacket Size Chart by Age (2–14 Years): How to Measure, Fit and Room to Grow

A girls jacket size chart lists, for each age band, the jacket's length, chest and across-shoulder measurements in inches or cm. To choose a size, lay a jacket that already fits her flat and measure it — or measure her chest and add 4–6 in (10–15 cm) for a winter jacket — then match the chest column and check the length. A girls jacket size chart is the one page parents open twice: once before ordering and once after the jacket arrives with the sleeves past her fingertips. Search for a kids jacket size chart and Google gives you a men's-and-women's chart at the top, a handful of single-brand tables with no explanation of what the numbers mean, and a Pinterest board. None of them tells you the two things that actually decide whether a jacket fits a child — whether the chart is measuring the jacket or the girl, and how much of it is room to grow.

Girls jacket size chart by age: 1–2 Y to 14–15 Y in inches

INCLUD's girls jacket size chart by age runs from 1–2 Y to 15–16 Y and lists three jacket measurements per band — length, chest and across shoulder — in inches. Chest and waist are the same figure on every row because the jackets are straight-cut. The table below is the 1–2 Y to 14–15 Y section, the bands the girls' jacket collection is stocked in. Read on 14 September 2026 from the Coats & Jackets chart shown on the product pages.

These are the jacket's finished measurements, not your daughter's body measurements. A jacket has to go over a T-shirt, a sweatshirt and sometimes a sweater, so its chest is cut several inches wider than the child who wears it. Use the chart the way a tailor would: compare it with a jacket that fits her, or with her body measurement plus a layering allowance — both methods are in the next section.

*The height guide is the international height-based sizing convention (a size 98 fits a child up to 98 cm tall), added so you can sanity-check a band against her height. It is not part of INCLUD's chart, and Indian growth references run a few centimetres below it — so a girl at the bottom of a height range often fits the band below. Measure rather than assume.

Three things stand out when you read the girls jacket size chart as a whole rather than one row at a time:

Length grows faster than chest. Between 2–3 Y and 13–14 Y the jacket length goes from 15 in to 25 in — ten inches — while the chest goes from 28 in to 36 in, eight inches. Children get tall faster than they get broad. If last year's jacket is short at the wrist and hem but still zips comfortably, that is why, and it means length is usually the measurement to size up for.

Chest plateaus at 3–4 Y, 7–8 Y and 12–13 Y. Each of those bands has the same chest as the band below it and only gains length. So a seven-year-old who has outgrown a 6–7 Y jacket in the sleeves does not need more room around the body — the 7–8 Y is the same width, an inch longer.

8–9 Y and 10–11 Y exist on the chart but barely in the jacket range. Most winter jackets for girls are cut in the odd-numbered ladder — 7–8 Y, 9–10 Y, 11–12 Y, 13–14 Y — with 12–13 Y as the exception. On 14 September 2026 only 10 of the 168 styles in the collection offered 8–9 Y and only 5 offered 10–11 Y. In practice, then, an eight-year-old chooses between 7–8 Y and 9–10 Y, and the question becomes how much room to grow she needs, which the age-by-age section answers.

Girls jacket size chart in cm

The girls jacket size chart in cm is the same INCLUD chart converted at 2.54 cm to the inch and rounded to the nearest centimetre: a 2–3 Y jacket is 38 cm long with a 71 cm chest and a 30 cm shoulder; a 7–8 Y is 48 cm long with a 79 cm chest and a 36 cm shoulder; a 13–14 Y is 64 cm long with a 91 cm chest and a 43 cm shoulder.

The product-page size chart has an inch/cm toggle, so you can switch units there too. This table exists because a jacket size chart for kids in inches is what most Indian brands publish, while most measuring tapes sold in India are marked in centimetres on the side parents actually read.

If you are comparing with a European site, remember the two charts measure different things. A European kids clothing size chart by age usually gives the child's body chest and height (size 122 = 122 cm tall, body chest around 63 cm). INCLUD's girls jacket size chart in cm gives the jacket. Baby girl jacket size chart: 0–24 months

The baby jacket size chart on INCLUD runs in six month-bands from 0–3 M to 18–24 M. A jacket for baby girl 0–3 months is 12 in (30 cm) long with a 23 in (58 cm) chest; a jacket for baby girl 6–9 months is 13 in (33 cm) long with a 24 in (61 cm) chest; a jacket for baby girl 12–18 months is 13 in long with a 26 in (66 cm) chest. Below two years, buy by length and chest, and treat the month label as a rough guide only.

Babies change shape faster than they change size, which is why a baby clothes size chart is always in months and why the month bands overlap so much — a jacket for baby girl 1 year can be the 9–12 M or the 12–18 M depending on whether she is at the 25th or the 90th percentile for weight. Two rules cover most of it. First, if she is above the typical weight for her age, go up a band: baby jackets are cut for length, and a heavier baby fills the chest first. Second, a jacket for baby girl 6 months or younger should be a lightweight jacket for baby girl use — fleece or a soft quilted layer — that opens fully down the front, because you will be putting it on and taking it off a sleeping child.

Note that the baby chart's width measurement is labelled "shoulder" rather than "across shoulder"; it is the same seam-to-seam measurement across the back. A jacket for baby girl 2 years sits at the join between the two charts: the 18–24 M and the 1–2 Y are the same jacket by the numbers (14 in long, 27 in chest, 12 in shoulder), so choose by which collection has the style you want. How to measure jacket size for kids?

To measure jacket size for kids, lay a jacket that already fits the child flat and zipped, measure armpit to armpit and double it for the chest, top of the shoulder to hem for the length, and seam to seam across the back for the across shoulder, then match those numbers to the size chart. If no jacket fits, measure the child's chest over a T-shirt and add 4–6 in (10–15 cm) for a winter jacket, or 2–3 in (5–8 cm) for a light one, and match that to the chest column.

You need a soft measuring tape, a table and five minutes. A metal tape from the toolbox works if you keep it flat; so does a piece of string and a ruler. Write the numbers in your phone with the date, because you will need them again in four months.

Method 1: measure a jacket that fits (the reliable one)

This is the method that matches how the chart is built, because it compares jacket to jacket and needs no guessing about layering allowance.

1. Lay it flat. Zip or button the jacket, lay it face up on a table and smooth it out without stretching it. A knitted fleece jacket will give an inch if you pull it; do not.
2. Chest. Measure straight across the front from the bottom of one armhole to the bottom of the other, then double it. A jacket that measures 15.5 in across is a 31 in chest — the 6–7 Y or 7–8 Y row.
3. Length. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, right beside the collar, straight down the front to the bottom of the hem.
4. Across shoulder. Turn the jacket over and measure across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
5. Sleeve length. From the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff. INCLUD's chart does not list sleeve length, so use this number to compare with the jacket she is outgrowing rather than with the chart.
6. Match and adjust. Find the band whose chest is equal to or one inch above the jacket you measured, then confirm the length. If the jacket you measured is one she has just outgrown, go one band up from where it lands.

Method 2: measure the child

Use this when nothing she owns fits well, or when you are buying her first proper winter jacket.

1. Chest. With her standing straight in a T-shirt, pass the tape around the fullest part of her chest, under the arms, level all the way round. Snug, not tight. This is the body chest.
2. Add the layering allowance. A winter jacket worn over a sweatshirt or sweater needs 4–6 in (10–15 cm) more than her body chest; a light cotton, denim or sleeveless fleece jacket worn over a T-shirt needs 2–3 in (5–8 cm). The result is the jacket chest you are looking for on the chart.
3. Across shoulder. Straight across her back from the bone at the edge of one shoulder to the other. The jacket's across shoulder should be the same or up to an inch more; two inches more and the sleeves will hang off her.
4. Length. From the top of her shoulder beside the neck down to where you want the hem: the hip bone for a regular jacket, mid-thigh for a longline, above the knee for a coat.
5. Height. Stand her against a wall, heels touching it, and mark above her head. Use it against the height guide column to check the band the chest sent you to is plausible.

Height and weight are the two numbers most parents know without a tape, and they are the two the chart cares least about. Two girls of exactly 128 cm can be two bands apart at the chest. Measure the chest.

Where to measure for jacket size: the five points

If you want the short version of where to measure for jacket size, it is these five points — chest at the fullest part, across shoulder bone to bone at the back, length from the top of the shoulder to the hip, sleeve from the shoulder bone to the wrist bone with the arm slightly bent, and height against a wall. The chest decides the band; the length confirms it; the sleeve and shoulder tell you whether the fit will look right.

How to calculate jacket size?

To calculate jacket size from a body measurement, add the layering allowance to the child's chest — 4–6 in for a winter jacket, 2–3 in for a light one — find the first band on the chart whose chest is equal to or above that number, then check that the band's length is equal to or above her shoulder-to-hip measurement. If the length points to a higher band than the chest does, take the higher band.

Worked example: a nine-year-old with a 27 in body chest and a 20 in shoulder-to-hip length. For a winter jacket, 27 + 5 = 32 in, which is the 8–9 Y row (32 in chest, 20 in length). The length matches, so 8–9 Y is the calculated size — but 8–9 Y is rarely cut in jackets, so in practice she takes the 9–10 Y (33 in chest, 21 in length) and gets a season of room to grow with it. There is no kids' jacket size calculator that improves on this sum; every one online is doing the same arithmetic with a hidden allowance.

How to measure size for kids without a tape?

To measure size for kids without a measuring tape, wrap a length of string or a phone-charger cable around the chest, pinch where it meets, and lay it against a ruler or a school scale; or lay the child's best-fitting jacket flat on a sheet of A4 paper, which is 21 cm (8.3 in) wide, and count widths. Neither is as accurate as a tape, so if the result lands within half an inch of a band boundary, treat it as the higher band.

How to choose jacket size: fit, layering allowance and room to grow

To choose jacket size for a girl, start from her age band on the chart, confirm it with the chest measurement of a jacket that fits, then decide how much room to grow you want: her own band fits this winter with a little ease; one band up gives about 1 in (2.5 cm) more length and chest, which is roughly a year of growth for a 4-to-10-year-old and buys a second winter at the cost of a looser first one. Size up for length, never for width alone.

Every kids' size guide says "leave room to grow" without saying how much, so here is the number. On INCLUD's chart one band is one inch of length and, usually, one inch of chest. Between four and ten, most girls gain 5–7 cm of height a year, of which about an inch lands in the torso — so one band is about one year. There is no half band. You are choosing between a jacket that fits now and a jacket that fits next winter, and the fit check below tells you which one you are looking at.

How much room to grow should a kids' jacket have?

A kids' jacket should have enough room to grow that it closes over her thickest winter layer with the sleeves reaching her wrist bone, and no more than one band's worth — about an inch — beyond that. Sleeves that cover her hands, a hem past mid-thigh on a regular jacket, or shoulder seams more than an inch past her shoulder bone are two bands too big, and a jacket that big is cold at the neck and cuffs, which defeats the point of it.

The growth room you leave should depend on her age, because growth is not steady. Under three, buy the band she is in: toddlers grow fast but a toddler girl winter jacket with sleeves over her hands is a toddler who cannot climb, eat or hold a hand. From four to ten, growth is fast and predictable, so one band up in October is a sensible buy for a jacket you want to last two winters. From ten to thirteen, the puberty growth spurt can add 8 cm in a year — measure her every three months and, if she is mid-spurt, buy the second jacket later in the season rather than guessing in October.

How to choose the right size kids jacket? The six-point fit check

To choose the right size kids jacket, put it on her over the thickest layer she will wear under it and check six things: the shoulder seam sits on her shoulder bone; the zip closes without pulling; the cuff reaches her wrist bone with her arm straight; the hem still covers her waistband when she raises both arms; the hood stays up and clears her eyes when she looks down; and she can wrap her arms around herself without the back pulling tight.

1. Shoulder seam on the shoulder bone. Up to an inch past it is room to grow; more than that and the sleeves will be too long as well.
2. Zip closes over the thick layer. Try it over the sweatshirt or sweater, not the T-shirt she happens to be wearing. If it only closes over a T-shirt, it is a light jacket, whatever the label says.
3. Cuff at the wrist bone. With her arm straight, the cuff should sit on the wrist bone; with her arm bent to hold a bag strap, it should not ride past the middle of the forearm.
4. Hem covers the waistband with arms up. Ask her to reach for a shelf. A regular jacket that rides above her jeans' waistband is too short in the body and will be too short by January.
5. Hood fit. If it is hooded — and 89 of the 168 jackets in the girls' collection are — the hood should stay up when she walks and not fall over her eyes when she looks down. A hood that only fits with a band up is a jacket to buy in that band.
6. Arms around herself. She should be able to touch her opposite shoulders. If the back pulls, the across shoulder is too small, and no amount of length will fix it.

If she passes all six in her age band, buy her age band. If she passes in her band but the cuff and hem are exactly at the limit, buy one up — she will hit the limit by December.

Which size jacket should I buy if she is between two bands?

If she is between two bands, buy the larger one for a winter jacket, a coat or anything she will layer under, and the smaller one for a light jacket, a denim jacket, a faux leather jacket or a fitted or crop style that is meant to sit close to the body. A winter jacket that is a little big is warm and lasts; a fitted jacket that is a little big looks borrowed.

Two exceptions. A puffer jacket is bulky by design, so the lofted fill fills the extra room and one band up reads as two; buy a puffer true to size. And with a toddler, favour the smaller band whenever it passes the fit check, because a toddler drowns in room to grow.

Regular fit, loose fit and true to size: what the words mean on a girls' jacket

On a kids' jacket, "regular fit" means the jacket is cut to the chart with a normal layering allowance; "loose fit" or "oversized" means it is cut one to two inches wider than the chart for the same band; and "true to size" means the brand is telling you not to size up, because the band already fits the age it is labelled for. Read the fit line on the product page before you decide whether to go up a band — if the jacket is already a loose fit, sizing up adds width she does not need.

What size jacket for a 7 year old — and every other age from 2 to 14

A seven-year-old girl usually takes the 7–8 Y jacket: 19 in (48 cm) long, 31 in (79 cm) chest, 14 in (36 cm) across shoulder, for a height of roughly 122–128 cm. The 7–8 Y has the same chest as the 6–7 Y and one inch more length, so a seven-year-old whose 6–7 Y jacket is short in the sleeve but not tight should move up; one whose 6–7 Y still covers her wrists can wear it another season.

That is the pattern for every age: start at the age band, then let the chest and the length decide. The table below is the whole chart read by age, followed by the questions parents ask about the ages that cause the most trouble — eight, ten, twelve and fourteen — where the size ladder skips a band or the growth spurt gets in the way.

What size is a toddler girl winter jacket? (ages 2–3)

A toddler girl winter jacket is the 2–3 Y for most two-year-olds — 15 in (38 cm) long, 28 in (71 cm) chest — and the 3–4 Y for most three-year-olds, which has the same chest and a wider shoulder. Buy a toddler the band she is in now, not one up: a jacket for toddler girl use has to let her climb, eat and be lifted, and sleeves over the hands stop all three.

Toddler winter jackets for girls are where fit matters most and sizing up helps least. A three-year-old usually takes the 3–4 Y (28 in chest, 15 in length), a four-year-old the 4–5 Y (29 in chest, 16 in length) and a five-year-old the 5–6 Y (30 in chest, 17 in length). These three bands grow exactly one inch of chest and one inch of length per year, so a jacket bought one band up in October fits properly by the following October.

A jacket for kids' girls' 3 years is the age where the chest plateau works in your favour: the 3–4 Y has the same 28 in chest as the 2–3 Y, so a small three-year-old can stay in the 2–3 Y for a second winter if the sleeves still reach. A jacket for kids' girls' 4 years and a jacket for kids' girls' 5 years follow the ladder normally. A winter jacket for girls 4 years old is often her first with a proper hood and a full zip, so check the hood fit at this age rather than assuming it: a hood that falls over a four-year-old's eyes is a hood she pushes back and leaves off. A winter jacket for girls 5 years old is the first that has to survive a school playground, which argues for a fleece or a hooded zip jacket in this band rather than a coat.

A six-year-old girl usually takes the 6–7 Y jacket: 18 in (46 cm) long, 31 in (79 cm) chest, 14 in (36 cm) across shoulder, for a height of roughly 116–122 cm. If she is at the top of that height range in October, buy the 7–8 Y — it is the same chest, an inch longer, and will fit through the whole winter.

Six is the age the height guide starts to matter more than the age label. Jackets for 6 year old girls span the 5–6 Y, 6–7 Y and 7–8 Y bands depending on height alone, because all three are within an inch of each other at the chest. A winter jacket for girls 6 years old is therefore the first size decision where measuring the length of a jacket that fits — top of the shoulder to hem — is worth more than the chest measurement. An eight-year-old girl is an 8–9 Y on the chart — 20 in (51 cm) long, 32 in (81 cm) chest — but 8–9 Y is rarely cut in jackets, so she chooses between the 7–8 Y (31 in chest, 19 in length) if she is average or small for her age and the 9–10 Y (33 in chest, 21 in length) if she is tall or you want the jacket to last two winters. Most eight-year-olds buying in October take the 9–10 Y.

This is the single most-searched sizing question in the cluster and the one the chart answers least directly. On the girls' jacket collection, 128 styles come in 7–8 Y and 94 in 9–10 Y, but only 10 in 8–9 Y — so a jacket for girls 8 years old is, in practice, a 7–8 Y or a 9–10 Y. Use the six-point fit check on the 7–8 Y over her thickest sweater; if the cuff and hem are already at the limit, the 9–10 Y is the right buy. Girls' jackets age 8 in US terms — a girls winter jacket size 8, or girls' jackets size 8 — are cut for the 8–9 Y row; a puffer jacket for girls 8 years old goes true to size, which here means the 7–8 Y if it passes the check, because puffers fill their own room. A coat for a 10 year old girl is usually the 11–12 Y — 23 in (58 cm) long, 35 in (89 cm) chest — rather than the 10–11 Y on the chart, because 10–11 Y is rarely cut in outerwear and a coat is bought for length. A jacket for girls 10 years, as opposed to a coat, is more often the 9–10 Y (33 in chest, 21 in length), sized up to 11–12 Y only if she is tall or mid growth spurt.

Ten is the age two things happen at once: the size ladder skips a band, and the growth spurt can start. A jacket for girls 10 years old bought in October at 9–10 Y can be short by February if she grows 4 cm over the winter, which is why a coat for girls 10 years — longer, worn over more — is the purchase to size up, and a hooded zip jacket or fleece is the one to buy true to size. A 12-14 year old girl spans the 12–13 Y (35 in chest, 24 in length), 13–14 Y (36 in chest, 25 in length) and 14–15 Y (37 in chest, 26 in length) bands. In US sizes this is a 12 to 14, a youth L or XL; in Indian numeric sizes a 32 to 34. Girls' jackets age 14 are the top of the kids' range and the point where the layering allowance is at its narrowest — about 3 in over the dress chart — so a fourteen-year-old who layers should choose a loose-fit style rather than a fitted one.
